Pennington County Vehicle/Pedestrian Fatal Crash

Where:  U.S. Highway 1416 and South Gate Road, Box Elder, S.D.

When:   10:25 p.m., Saturday, August 9, 2023

Driver: Male, 27, Minor injuries

Vehicle: 2009 Ford Fusion

Pedestrian: Male, 24, Fatal injuries

Pennington County, S.D.- One person died Saturday night in a vehicle/pedestrian crash in Box Elder, S.D.

The names of the persons involved have not been released pending notification of family members.

Preliminary crash information indicates a 2009 Ford Fusion driven by a 27-year-old male was traveling eastbound in the left lane on US Hwy 1416.  A 24-year-old male walked out of the median and into the eastbound left lane of Hwy 1416.  The Fusion struck the pedestrian. 

The 27-year-old male driver of the 2009 Ford Fusion sustained minor injuries.

The driver was wearing a seatbelt.

The 24-year-old male pedestrian was taken to Monument Heath Rapid City but had sustained fatal injuries.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.

The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
