PIERRE – Governor Larry Rhoden has officially proclaimed May 12-18, 2025, as National Prevention Week in South Dakota, calling on communities across the state to come together in support of prevention efforts that promote healthy behaviors, resilience, and well-being.
National Prevention Week is an annual observance dedicated to raising awareness about the devastating significance of substance misuse and the unique challenges that persons experiencing poor mental health face. The week serves as a reminder that prevention is not just about individual choices — it is a collective effort that aims to strengthen the collective, supportive efforts of families, schools, and communities.
“In South Dakota, we believe in the power of good decision-making and personal discipline. Yet we acknowledge these healthy behaviors are strengthened by supportive communities,” said DSS Cabinet Secretary Matt Althoff. “By working together to educate on the dangers of substance misuse while at the same time building an encouraging culture within our community, we ensure a future marked by human thriving for all South Dakotans.”
Prevention is most effective when families, schools, and communities work together to educate, support, and empower people. The South Dakota Department of Social Services, Division of Behavioral Health, local coalitions, and countless community organizations are encouraging all South Dakotans to get involved in National Prevention Week by attending events, starting conversations, and supporting those working to create positive change.
“When we invest in prevention, we help shape the future of South Dakota,” said Althoff. “May this week of intentional efforts around prevention renew our efforts to put factual information in front of impressionable minds and, at the same time, help our youth to see the personal success that their communities hope for their future.”
