Pierre, S.D. -- The South Dakota Department of Education (DOE) is pleased to announce that Laura Scheibe has been named deputy secretary of the department.

Scheibe, who has over a decade of experience in working with the DOE, most recently served as the director of the Division of College, Career, and Student Success and the state’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) director. In that capacity, she also oversaw Jobs for America’s Graduates – South Dakota (JAG-SD), student wellness and supports, the GED, and more.

“Laura Scheibe has proven herself to be dedicated to excellence in education,” said Secretary of Education Joe Graves. “Her leadership over initiatives such as JAG-SD, CTE, and dual credit programs has helped thousands of South Dakota students thrive in high school and beyond. I have no doubt that she will serve capably as the department’s deputy secretary.”

“I’m honored to have the trust of Secretary Graves and the incredible team at the department,” said Scheibe. “I look forward to serving all South Dakota learners who put their trust in us. My mission is to help South Dakota educators prepare all students for a future that makes the most of their potential. I will do all I can to make that happen.”

Scheibe has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and a graduate certificate from the University of South Dakota. Before her time at the DOE, Ms. Scheibe served for more than a decade as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State in assignments both overseas and in Washington, D.C. She and her husband Aaron, an attorney in private practice, are raising their two sons in Pierre.
