Highway Patrol Urges Safe Driving During Fourth of July Holiday
Pierre, SD – As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, the South Dakota Highway Patrol (SDHP) is urging all drivers to prioritize safety on the road. With increased traffic expected on the roadways, state troopers will be highly visible and focused on crash prevention to ensure a safe holiday travel weekend for everyone.
"Our primary goal this Fourth of July is to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable celebration," said Colonel Casey Collins, Superintendent of the SDHP. "We want families to make lasting memories, not encounter preventable tragedies on our roadways. Our troopers will be highly visible and actively engaged in enforcement efforts, focusing on impaired driving, speeding, and seatbelt usage to help everyone reach their destinations and celebrations safely."
The Fourth of July is traditionally a time for celebration and travel, but it also brings a higher risk of crashes and traffic-related incidents. To combat this, the Highway Patrol will increase patrols and implement special enforcement initiatives focused on speeding, impaired driving, and seatbelt usage.
Key Safety Tips for Drivers:
Slow Down: Observe speed limits and adjust speed according to road conditions.
Stay Alert: Avoid distractions such as texting, eating, or using in-car technologies while driving.
Drive Sober: Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Designate a sober driver or use alternative transportation.
Buckle Up: Ensure that all passengers are wearing seatbelts at all times.
Plan Ahead: Allow extra time for travel, anticipate delays, and be patient with other drivers.
The SDHP is committed to keeping the roads safe and reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities. By following these safety tips and remaining vigilant, we can all contribute to a safer holiday travel experience.
