SOUTH DAKOTA CELEBRATES CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH
PIERRE, S.D. - South Dakota’s cybersecurity and artificial intelligence industry has grown 350 percent over the past decade, the second-fastest rate in the nation. That momentum is fueling thousands of high-paying jobs, new research facilities, and a stronger economy across the state.
Governor Larry Rhoden and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) are highlighting this progress during Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October.
“South Dakota is proving that the careers of the future can be had right here in our home state. These career opportunities will be a vital part of keeping our state and nation strong, safe, and free,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “Under the Noem-Rhoden Administration, we declared cybersecurity South Dakota’s ‘Next Big Industry,’ and the results back that up.”
With strong public and private investment, South Dakota is securing its place as a national leader in cybersecurity and AI.
In 2024, South Dakota recorded nearly 10,000 computer and mathematical jobs, with 7,840 of those considered core cybersecurity and AI positions. The sector’s real GDP reached $953 million, up 105 percent in the last five years. Today, the state is home to 1,618 core cybersecurity and AI business establishments.
“Cybersecurity is critical to both our national security and our economic future,” said GOED Commissioner Bill Even. “South Dakota is proving that we can compete with anyone in this space. We’re building good careers, driving research that matters, and making sure our state is Open for Opportunity in this rapidly changing field.”
Workforce development continues to grow alongside industry demand. Last year, 618 computer and information sciences degrees were awarded in South Dakota. The Beacom College of Computer & Cyber Sciences at Dakota State University plays a central role in this pipeline, with 1,936 students currently enrolled. DSU is one of only 11 universities in the nation to carry all three National Security Agency Center of Academic Excellence designations.
Dakota State University’s Applied Research Corporation (DARC) is a key driver of South Dakota’s cybersecurity growth. With a mission to strengthen national security and foster innovation, DARC also creates career opportunities that keep top tech talent right here in our state.
As Cybersecurity Awareness Month unfolds, GOED encourages businesses, educators, and individuals alike to learn more about cybersecurity best practices and the career opportunities available in this high-demand field.
