South Dakota State Fair to Host 75th National Targhee Sheep Show and Sale
HURON, S.D. - The South Dakota State Fair is excited to announce that it will host the National Targhee Sheep Show and Sale, July 15-18, 2026, at The SHED on the South Dakota State Fairgrounds.
The 2026 National Targhee Show and Sale, hosted by the U.S. Targhee Sheep Association, marks the 75th annual event and celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Targhee breed. It will feature the National Show and Sale, the National Junior Show, and conclude with the sale of all open show sheep. Participants from nine states are expected, offering a prime opportunity to showcase and purchase top-tier genetics.
“We are excited to bring the National Targhee Show and Sale to the new SHED facility,” said association member Jon Beastrom. “The facility offers excellent space and amenities for our exhibitors and animals, and we look forward to showcasing our breed in South Dakota.”
“The State Fair is proud to welcome the National Targhee Sheep Association and its members to the South Dakota State Fairgrounds. The SHED was designed to support events like this, and we are excited to see it serve the sheep industry on a national level,” said South Dakota State Fairgrounds Manager Peggy Besch.
The SHED serves as the permanent home for the Open Class Sheep during the annual South Dakota State Fair and functions as a multi-use livestock facility. It includes a 1,320 square-foot education center and has capacity for up to 1,000 sheep.
The Targhee breed was developed in 1926, and the U.S. Targhee Sheep Association was established in 1951 by a group of leading sheep producers. The association’s mission is to be a member-driven organization that registers, promotes, advocates for, and improves the Targhee breed to ultimately strengthen the U.S. sheep industry.
