South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Named Finalist for IACP/Motorola Solutions Trooper of the Year Award

PIERRE, S.D.
— South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Kyle Knievel has been selected as one of four finalists for the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)/Motorola Solutions Trooper of the Year Award, an international honor recognizing exceptional bravery, professionalism, and service by state and provincial troopers. The award winner will be announced March 12 at the IACP Division Midyear Meeting and Banquet in Boston.

“Trooper Knievel’s actions reflect the highest standards of service and courage,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “His quick decision-making under extreme circumstances saved lives and demonstrated the professionalism and dedication South Dakota citizens expect from our law enforcement officers. We are proud to see his heroism recognized on an international stage.”

Trooper Knievel was nominated for his decisive response during a high-risk pursuit in Haakon County in August of 2025 that escalated into a life-threatening situation. During the incident, the suspect took a hostage at gunpoint and fired shots at law enforcement. Trooper Knievel engaged the suspect, stopped the threat and brought the incident to a close. The hostage was rescued without injury.

Each year, the IACP and Motorola Solutions honor troopers from around the world who demonstrate extraordinary courage and commitment to public safety. The four finalists represent regional selections from state and provincial police agencies across North America.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol congratulates Trooper Knievel on this distinguished recognition and thanks him for his service, bravery, and dedication to protecting the people of South Dakota.
