Interior Capitol Restoration Work Enters Next Phase

Article Body

PIERRE, S.D. – On March 16, 2026, work will begin on the second phase of the Capitol repair and restoration project. This phase includes restoration of plaster, painting, and lighting in the Rotunda and South Entry. Conrad Schmitt Studios will complete the cleaning, painting, and restoration of the plaster and artwork. The updated lighting system, designed by West Plains Engineering/RDG, will be installed by Ferding Electric.

A large scaffolding system will be installed throughout the rotunda before the main restoration work begins. This phase of the project is expected to take approximately six months.

“The State Capitol Rotunda is one of the most important spaces in our state,” says Bureau of Human Resources and Administration commissioner Darin Seeley. “When completed, this work will provide everyone who visits the opportunity to see its beauty more fully.”

The Capitol will remain open during this time, but we are asking everyone to stay clear of the construction areas, both for their safety and for the safety of our contractors.
