Gov. Rhoden Recognizes Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Day

PIERRE, S.D. – Today, Governor Larry Rhoden recognizes May 5th as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) Day in South Dakota. This is a day to remember those who have lost their lives, raise awareness of the issue, and identify steps to take when someone goes missing.

“I remain committed to advancing awareness and ensuring that families and communities have access to information and resources about MMIP,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “We also honor the families and loved ones who continue to carry the weight of unanswered questions. Their strength and perseverance remind us why we must work together to combat this issue.”

In February, Governor Rhoden’s Department of Tribal Relations hosted its annual StateTribal Relations Day at the Capitol, bringing together state, local, tribal, and federal partners for an event focused on addressing the MMIP crisis. The event drew an impressive turnout, reflecting the deep commitment across South Dakota to confront this issue headon. Attendees heard powerful testimony that displayed the urgency of the MMIP crisis and the resilience of the families who continue to advocate for justice for their loved ones.

If someone you know goes missing, it is critical to file a report immediately. Contact your local law enforcement agency and tribal law enforcement as soon as possible. When making a report, please be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Full name, age, height, and weight of the missing person;
  • Distinctive physical characteristics, including tattoos, scars, or birthmarks;
  • A description of the clothing they were last seen wearing;
  • The exact time and location where they were last observed; and
  • A recent photograph of the individual.

Governor Rhoden asks every South Dakotan to stay vigilant by checking the Attorney General’s Missing Persons website on a regular basis. If you have information to share or need support regarding an MMIP case, please connect with the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Coordinator, Allison Morrisette, at Allison.Morrisette@state.sd.us. A single tip can make all the difference and may save a life.
