Gov. Rhoden Strengthens Education with Additional Teacher Apprenticeships
PIERRE, S.D. – Today, Governor Larry Rhoden further committed to strengthening South Dakota’s education system by creating 31 additional apprenticeship spots for the South Dakota Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway (SD TAP) program.
“Our students are the future of our state, and teachers help make sure they are ready for the opportunities that come their way,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “Our teacher apprenticeship program is a proven model that supports our teachers and our communities by developing more certified teachers and keeping educators in our schools.”
SD TAP was created in 2023 under the Noem-Rhoden Administration with the goal of addressing teacher shortages across the state. Over a two-year period, participants are enabled to earn a bachelor’s degrees in elementary, secondary, or special education – all while continuing their work as paraprofessionals. On Saturday, May 9, 50 teachers earned their diplomas from Dakota State University (DSU) and Northern State University (NSU), bringing the total teachers created from this program to 118.
The 4th Cohort of the program was scheduled to accept up to 40 participants for fall 2026 enrollment; however, thanks to Governor Rhoden’s investment of $500,000 from the Future Fund, 71 paraprofessionals will have the opportunity to earn their teaching degree while remaining in their classroom and their community.
“Teacher apprenticeships don’t just prepare educators for the classroom – they create lifelong leaders and learners who will inspire generations to come,” said DLR Secretary Marcia Hultman. “I am proud of all our past TAP graduates and am grateful to Governor Rhoden for creating opportunities for incredible individuals who will go on to bless and nurture students across our entire state.”
SD TAP is made possible thanks to the partnership between the South Dakota Department of Education (DOE), the South Dakota Department of Labor & Regulation (DLR), DSU, NSU, the South Dakota Board of Regents, and local school districts.
“SD TAP has been a remarkable program, delivering strong results in combating the teacher shortage and equipping educators with the skills they need to lead a classroom well,” said DOE Secretary Joe Graves. “I am incredibly grateful for Governor Rhoden’s commitment to strengthening the future of education and empower the next generation of teachers.”
