Mobridge-Pollock High School Student Wins $10,000 in
Highway Safety’s Lesson Learned SD Program


Mobridge, SD: A Mobridge-Pollock High School freshman is the winner of a $10,000 prize – and another $10,000 for her school – by learning to be a safe driver.

Avery Schlomer was announced as the winner of this year’s Lesson Learned SD program during an all-school assembly at Mobridge-Pollock High School where she was presented with a $10,000 cash prize. Schlomer also gets to choose a school program to receive a $10,000 award as well. The Lesson Learned SD program is in its 10th year and is provided in partnership with the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety and the South Dakota Broadcasters Association.

“This initiative has encouraged young drivers to make smart, responsible decisions behind the wheel,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “Every time they choose to stay focused, wear a seatbelt, slow down, and avoid distractions, they help make our roads safer for everyone.”

Students identified safe driving habits on the Lesson Learned SD website and were entered into the drawing. This year, there were more than 5,300 entries.

“Part of our mission at the Office of Highway Safety is to promote safe driving habits making our roads safer for everyone,” said Office of Highway Safety director, Rob Weinmeister. “By partnering with the South Dakota Broadcasters Association and other groups, we are able to promote and reward safe driving awareness. How you drive matters. It starts with you, so drive safely.”

“This program gives students a fun and engaging way to learn the importance of safe driving habits like wearing seat belts, avoiding distractions, and making responsible decisions behind the wheel,” said Steve Willard, president of the Broadcaster’s Association. “Those lessons can make a real difference for young drivers and their communities.”

South Dakota’s Office of Highway Safety is an agency of the Department of Public Safety.
