Promoting Literacy, Community, and Engagement Through Storytime SD

Article Body

Pierre, S.D. – The South Dakota State Library (SDSL) is excited to invite everyone to participate in November’s Storytime South Dakota at public libraries across the state. Local community members are scheduled to read aloud the 2025-26 Prairie Bud award-winning book: The Wrong Book by Drew Daywalt.

Leading up to November, public libraries were invited to register special guest speakers to promote storytime in their community. This program promotes the importance of early literacy, community engagement, and connectedness.

“Storytime SD is an opportunity for public libraries to increase community engagement, strengthen early literacy development, and get more people into the libraries,” said State Librarian George Seamon. “Public libraries are a staple in all areas of the state, from small rural towns to big cities. This program highlights literacy and community, which is an integral component of what the State Library strives to cultivate in the work we do.”

While registration has already closed, libraries are still encouraged to participate in this event all month long. Libraries should reach out to individuals in their community, including, but not limited to, the local mayor, small business owners, mentors, students, or someone who has a knack for engaging storytelling.

A full list of registered libraries can be found at library.sd.gov/LIB/CYS/storytimesd/index.aspx.
