State CoP Team, National Partners Meeting in November

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Human Services Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) Community of Practice (CoP) state team will be holding their first meeting with their national partners on Nov. 1.

DDD was recently selected to join a consortium of states in the National Community of Practice for Supporting Families project to strengthen best practices in supporting families that include a member with intellectual or developmental disabilities across the lifespan.

“We are fortunate to have national leaders in Sheli Reynolds from the University of Missouri Kansas City Institute of Human Development and Barbara Brent from the National Association of State directors of Developmental Disabilities Services joining us to facilitate the development of our state team efforts,” said DDD Director Dan Lusk.

The state team will complete a work plan to ensure state policies, practices and systems support family networks, provide family-centered case management, expand service available in the home and strengthen the role of families in all models of services. The state team is comprised of family members, self-advocates, stakeholders, staff from within DDD and the executive director of the Developmental Disabilities Council.

Parent and team member Francey McOwen said, “As a member of the state team, I hope that I can inspire other parents to improve their quality of life as well as their children’s who rely on them.  The CoP is truly a life enhancement for the whole community and state.”

The meeting will be held at the Ramkota Convention Center located at 920 W. Sioux Ave., Pierre, S.D. from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and is open to the public.
