Names Released in Pennington County Fatal Crash

 

What:    Single motorcycle crash

Where:  Interstate 90, mile marker 67

               Box Elder, S.D.

When:   1:27 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2018

 

Driver: Sophia Elbow Shield, 39, Rapid City, S.D., Serious Non-Life Threatening Injuries

Passenger: Brian Minor, 62, Rapid City, S.D., Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2009 Suzuki VL800

 

BOX ELDER, S.D. – A Rapid City man has been identified as the person who died Saturday in a trike motorcycle crash in Box Elder.

  

A 2009 Suzuki VL800 was northbound on Liberty Boulevard in Box Elder when the female driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to turn left onto Interstate 90 westbound. The vehicle left the roadway at the I-90 on-ramp, entered the north ditch and hit a barbed wire fence.

 

Both occupants, who were not wearing helmets, were thrown from the motorcycle. Brian Minor, the 62-year-old male passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene.

 

Sophia Elbow Shield, 39, of Rapid City was the driver. She sustained serious non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the Rapid City hospital. Charges are pending against the driver.

 

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

 

The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
