Hamlin County Fatal Crash

 

What: Two-vehicle crash
Where: U.S. Highway 81, mile marker 135

              Five miles east of Lake Norden, S.D.
When:  3:23 p.m., Monday, Oct. 15, 2018

Driver No. 1: Female, 69, Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2013 Ford Explorer

 

Driver No. 2:  Male, 17, Minor Injuries

Passenger: Male, 15, No Injuries

Vehicle: 2012 Ford F-350 Pickup

 

LAKE NORDEN, S.D. – One person died and another was injured in a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred Monday afternoon east of Lake Norden.

 

Names of the three people involved in the crash are not being released pending notification of family members.

 

A 2013 Ford Explorer was southbound on U.S. Highway 81. The vehicle, while making a left turn onto South Dakota Highway 28, turned in front of a northbound 2012 Ford F-350 pickup which was pulling a trailer loaded with construction equipment.

 

The 69-year-old female driver of the Explorer was transported by ambulance to the Watertown hospital where she was pronounced dead. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

 

Sustaining minor injuries was the 17-year-old male driver of the pickup. He was taken to the Watertown hospital. He was cited for not wearing a seatbelt.

 

A 15-year-old male passenger in the pickup was not injured. He was wearing a seatbelt. .

 

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

 

The Highway Patrol is part of the state Department of Public Safety.
