Husby, Weinmeister Selected As New

Highway Patrol Assistant Superintendents

PIERRE, S.D. – Two South Dakota Highway Patrol captains, with a combined 40 years of experience, have been chosen as assistant superintendents of the Highway Patrol.

Captains Jason Husby and Robert Weinmeister began their new duties Monday (today, June 24). They will work with new Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. Rick Miller.

“We had five very good applicants for the jobs, but Captains Husby and Weinmeister stood out because of their experience and their different job skills,” Col. Miller said. “They will be instrumental in helping the Highway Patrol continue to grow and move forward.”

Weinmeister is in charge of all field operations for the Highway Patrol. That includes the Patrol’s district headquarters in Aberdeen, Sioux Falls, and Rapid City along with the Motor Carrier division.

Since joining the Highway Patrol in 1997, Weinmeister has served in Mobridge, Aberdeen, Huron, Redfield, and Pierre. As a Captain, Weinmeister was commander of the District 4 operations office in Pierre and has been the district commander for the Highway Patrol’s Aberdeen office since 2011.

Husby will lead the Highway Patrol’s administrative operations. He will supervise the Patrol’s canine division, training division, human resources, budget and finance, State Radio, Fusion Center and Pierre headquarters staff.

With the Highway Patrol since 2001, Husby has worked in Presho, Vermillion, Pierre, and Sioux Falls. He has been the district commander for the Patrol’s Sioux Falls office since 2016.

Both Husby and Weinmeister will be promoted to major during a pinning ceremony to be held at a later date. They replace former assistant superintendents Rick Miller, who was appointed as the Highway Patrol superintendent last Friday, and Dana Svendsen, who retired this spring.

“While I am excited to have Captains Husby and Weinmeister in their new positions, that does leave the commander positions open in Aberdeen and Sioux Falls,” Miller said. “We hope to have those jobs filled as soon as possible.”

The Highway Patrol is part of the Department of Public Safety.
