Chip Seal and Fog Seal Projects in the Mitchell Area

MITCHELL, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says chip seal and fog seal applications will be applied to several highways in the Mitchell Area of the state beginning Thursday, July 18. The contractor will move from one project to the next in the following order:

 

  1. Highway 224 – Eight miles, from Alpena east to junction Highway 37. The chip seal will begin on Thursday, July 18, and will take approximately two days to complete. The fog seal will take approximately another two days to complete.
  2. Highway 281 – 11 miles, from junction Highway 44 north to just south of the junction of Highway 42. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is three days. The fog seal will take another two days to complete.
  3. Highway 281 – Three miles, from just north of the Douglas/Charles Mix County Line north to Armour. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is one day. The fog seal will take another day to complete.
  4. Highway 18 – 18 miles, from junction Highway 281 east to junction Highway 37.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is four days. The fog seal will take another three days to complete.
  5. Highway 1804 – Four miles, from junction Highway 50 south to where the gravel starts.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is one day. The fog seal will take approximately another day to complete.
  6. Highway 50 – 24 miles, from junction Highway 44 south and east to Lake Andes.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is six days. The fog seal will take approximately another five days to complete.
  7. Highway 1804 – Eight miles, from junction Highway 44 south to where the gravel starts.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is two days. The fog seal will take approximately another two days to complete.
  8. Highway 44 – 16 miles, from junction of Highway 47 east to the Missouri River.  Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section is four days. The fog seal will take approximately another three days to complete.
  9. S.D Highway 38 – Eight miles, from junction Highway 38P east 8 miles. Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this section of highway is two days. The fog seal will take approximately two days to complete.

 

Traffic will be reduced to one lane and guided through the project with the use of flaggers and a pilot car. A delay of up to 15 minutes can be expected while traveling through the work area during daytime hours.

 

Loose gravel will be present for a period of 36 to 72 hours after each day’s chip seal application.  Traffic should travel at 40 M.P.H. or the speed limit, if it is less than 40 mph, during this time frame. The permanent pavement marking is scheduled to be applied within 14 days of completion of the chip & fog seal projects.

 

Bituminous Paving, Inc. from Ortonville, Minnesota is the prime contractor on the $3.75 million contract.
