Deuel County Fatal Crash


What:    Two-Vehicle Fatal Crash

Where:  Interstate 29, mile marker 150

              Five miles west of Toronto, S.D.

When:   12:12 p.m., Friday, Feb. 28, 2020


Driver No. 1: Female, 60, Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2013 Mazda Sport


Driver No. 2: Male, 49, No Injuries

Vehicle: 2005 Peterbilt Conventional 379 Semi-truck


TORONTO, S.D. – One person died Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash west of Toronto.  


Names of the two people involved are not being released at this time.


A 2005 Peterbilt Conventional 379 semi-truck was pulling a full trailer and a pup trailer northbound on Interstate 29 when the driver braked suddenly for two dogs running across the interstate. A 2013 Mazda Sport, which also was going northbound, rear-ended the pup trailer.


The 60-year-old female driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead at the scene. The 49-year-old male driver of the semi was not injured. Both were wearing seat belts.


Both northbound lanes of I-29 were closed for a time after the crash.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. All information is only preliminary at this point.


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
