GFP Commission Modifies Archery Deer Season, Adds Units in some Municipalities

GFP Commission Modifies Archery Deer Season, Adds Units in some Municipalities

PIERRE, S.D. – The Game, Fish and Parks Commission proposed to modify the deer season start date for Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge and Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge from the fourth Saturday of September to September 1. These changes align with the start date of archery deer hunting across the state.

Some municipalities have worked with GFP to develop urban deer management plans to help alleviate issues like vehicle/deer collisions and property damage. Archery deer hunting within city limits can help address issues caused by urban deer populations and provide additional hunting opportunities.

The commission also made an allowance for no more than 500 single-tag “antlerless any deer” licenses in addition to the one “antlerless whitetail deer” license for residents and nonresidents for Unit ARD-LM1, the area where antlerless whitetail archery deer licenses are valid. These “antlerless any deer” licenses would be distributed amongst established municipal archery deer hunting units for the city limits of Custer, Rapid City and Sioux Falls. Sixty licenses are proposed for each Sioux Falls and Rapid City, with 45 proposed for Custer. Season structure and specific regulations will be determined by the appropriate municipality within the requirements and restrictions of the South Dakota archery season.

To comment in person, the public hearing will be held May 7 at 2 p.m. MDT at Custer State Park event barn. Oral testimony can also be provided remotely at this time, via conference call at the following GFP offices:

  • Rapid City Regional Office (Outdoor Campus West) 4130 Adventure Trail, Rapid City, S.D.
  • Watertown Regional Office 400 West Kemp, Watertown, S.D.
  • Main Office, Foss Building, 523 E. Capitol Ave., Pierre, S.D.

Individuals can also comment online at gfp.sd.gov/forms/positions or mail comments to 523 E. Capitol Ave., Pierre, SD 57501.

To be included in the public record and to be considered by the commission, comments must include a full name and city of residence and meet the submission deadline of 72 hours before the public hearing (not including the day of the public hearing).
