Commission Rejects Petition to Amend Elk Hunting Unit Boundary

Commission Rejects Petition to Amend Elk Hunting Unit Boundary

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission rejected a public petition to amend the boundary to an existing elk hunting unit. The petitioner cited the desire of private property owners to increase or maintain the elk population in Unit H3.

Wildlife Division Director Tom Kirschenmann explained to the commission that the boundary of every elk hunting unit considers multiple factors and could be changed or adjusted based on both biological and social considerations.

In 2020, GFP and the commission will be revising the state elk management plan. During that process, hunting unit boundaries and other adjustments related to elk management and hunting units will be considered.
