Aurora County Fatal Crash


WHAT: One-Vehicle Crash

WHERE: Interstate 90, mile marker 305

                Three miles west of Plankinton, S.D.

WHEN:   6:30 p.m., Sunday, July 4, 2021


Driver: Female, 19, Serious Non- Life Threatening Injuries

Passengers: Male, 26 Fatal Injuries

                    Male, 60, Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2002 Toyota Camry


PLANKINTON, S.D. — Two people died and another person was seriously injured early Sunday night in a one-vehicle crash west of Plankinton.


Names of the three people involved are not yet being released pending notification of family members.


Preliminary information indicates that a 2002 Toyota Camry was eastbound on Interstate 90 when the driver lost control of the car. The vehicle went into the south ditch and rolled.


Both male passengers, ages 26 and 60, were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the vehicle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.


The 19-year-old female driver, whose seat belt use is under investigation, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. She was transported by ambulance to a Mitchell hospital and later airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital. Charges are pending against her.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation. All information is preliminary at this time.


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
