Names Released In Bennett County Fatal Crash


WHAT: Two-Vehicle Crash

WHERE: U.S. Highway 18, mile marker 135.5

               13 miles west of Martin, S.D.

WHEN: 5:45 p.m., Sunday, July 10, 2021


Driver No 1: William Stover, 69, Batesland, S.D., Fatal Injuries

Vehicle No. 1: 2009 Smart Fortwo


Driver No. 2: William Muhlstadt, 56, St. Petersburg, FL, No Injuries

Vehicle: 2018 Freightliner Semi truck


MARTIN, S.D. — A Batesland, S.D., man has been identified as the person who died Saturday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash west of Martin.


Preliminary information indicates that a 2009 Smart Fortwo was westbound on U.S. Highway 18 when it crossed the center line and collided with an eastbound 2018 Freightliner semi truck.


William Stover, the 69-year-old driver of the Smart Fortwo, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.


The truck driver was 56-year-old William Muhlstadt of St. Petersburg, FL. He was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation. All information is preliminary at this time.


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
