Buffalo County Fatal Crash


What:    Two-Vehicle Fatal Crash

Where:  349th Avenue

              14 miles northeast of Fort Thompson, S.D.

When:   7:33 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 1, 2021


Driver No. 1: Female, 17, Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2009 Chevrolet Equinox


Driver No. 2: Male, 78, Serious Non-Life Threatening Injuries

Passengers: Male, 77, Minor Injuries

                     Male, 68, Life-Threatening Injuries

Vehicle: 2018 Dodge Ram Pickup


FORT THOMPSON, S.D. – One person died and three other people were injured Sunday night in a two-vehicle crash that occurred northeast of Fort Thompson.


Names of the four people involved are not being released pending notification of family members.


Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2009 Chevrolet Equinox was northbound on 349th Avenue and a 2018 Dodge Ram Pickup was southbound on 349th Avenue. The two vehicles collided on top of a hill crest.


The 17-year-old female driver of the Chevrolet was transferred by ambulance to the Chamberlain hospital where she was pronounced dead. She was wearing a seat belt.


All three male occupants of the pickup also were injured. The 78-year-old driver suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and a 77-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries. Both were wearing seat belts and both were transferred to the Chamberlain hospital.


The third passenger in the pickup received life-threatening injuries. He was first taken to the Wessington Springs hospital and then transferred to a Sioux Falls hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.


The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
