Kites & Bites program Sept. 11 at Cultural Heritage Center and Hilger’s Gulch

PIERRE, S.D. -- The South Dakota State Historical Society Museum and Becki Potrzeba State Farm Agency in Pierre are teaming up to present Kites & Bites at the museum’s Family Fun Saturday on Sept.11 from 10-11:30 a.m. CDT (9-10:30 MDT).

Visitors will pick up a kite and an activity sheet at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre and then go across the street to Hilger’s Gulch where they can learn how to fly the kite. They will also receive a coupon for an ice cream treat from Zesto – the “bite” in kites and bites. In case of inclement weather both the kites and the Zesto coupons will be handed out at the Cultural Heritage Center. The program and materials are free to participants.

“Flying a kite on a beautiful fall day is a great experience,” said Jay Smith, museum director. “We are happy to partner with State Farm to give people a chance to try kite flying for themselves. Getting a coupon for a Zesto treat is a sweet bonus.”

South Dakota is the sixth windiest state in the United States with an average wind speed of 20.3 mph. The average wind speed in Hughes County is 22.3 mph, plenty of breeze to get a kite in the air.
