Food drive at Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre Nov. 6-21

PIERRE, S.D. -- The South Dakota State Historical Society Museum in Pierre will collect non-perishable food and personal items for the local food pantry Nov. 6-21.

Donations can be dropped off at the Cultural Heritage Center from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. CDT (8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. MDT) Monday-Saturday and 1-4:30 p.m. CDT (12-3:30 p.m. MDT) Sundays. A table will be set up in the building entrance for the donated items.

Items often requested by food pantries include canned meat like chicken or tuna, peanut butter, jelly, canned vegetables or fruits, cereal, crackers, rice, pasta, boxed meals like hamburger/tuna helper, granola snack bars, toilet paper, soap and shampoo, deodorant, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, and diapers.

These and other donated non-perishable items (no glass containers, please) will be given to the PARS food pantry. Dropping off a food donation could be combined with picking up some fun holiday take-to-make ornaments at the Take-to-Make a Holiday Ornament event being held Saturday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. CDT (9 a.m.-2 p.m. MDT) at the Cultural Heritage Center. Six different ornament bags will be available for pickup during those hours.

The museum is open for visitors. Signage encourages visitors to maintain 6-foot social distancing and hand sanitizer stations are located throughout the museum.

There is now free admission to the museum for all South Dakota residents. Out-of-state adult visitors pay an $8 admission fee or $6 for out-of-state seniors 60-and-older. Call 605-773-3458 for more information. For information on membership in the State Historical Society call 605-773-6000.
