Names Released In Pennington County Fatal Crash


What:    Two-Vehicle Crash

Where:  Country Road

              Within the city limits of Box Elder, S.D.

When:   7:51 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022


Driver No. 1: Derek Vice, 50, Box Elder, S.D., Fatal Injuries

Vehicle: 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt


Driver No. 2: Kyle Brown, 31, Rapid City, S.D., Serious Non-Life Threatening Injuries

Passengers: Male, 5, Minor Injuries

                      Female, 7, Minor Injuries

Vehicle: 2016 Toyota Tacoma


BOX ELDER, S.D. –  A Box Elder, S.D., man has been identified as the person who died last week in a two-vehicle crash within the city of Box Elder.


Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt was westbound on Country Road when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with an eastbound 2016 Toyota Tacoma.


Derek Vice, the 50-year-old driver of the Cobalt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Kyle Brown of Rapid City, the 31-year-old driver of the Toyota, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries while two juvenile passengers received minor injuries. Those three were transported to a Rapid City hospital.


All four people involved were wearing seatbelts.


South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.


The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
